New Delhi: India and China have agreed that solving the border row should be prioritised as “a prolongation of the prevailing situation wasn’t within the interest of either side”, the govt said today during a statement after a gathering between secretary of state S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. “…It was visibly impacting the connection during a negative manner,” the govt said within the statement, pertaining to the border situation.
Mr Jaishankar and Wang discussed “outstanding issues” along the road of Actual Control within the meeting in Tajikistan that lasted an hour. Both also agreed on calling a gathering between senior military commanders from each side .
The discussions between Mr Jaishankar and Wang happened at the Foreign Ministers’ meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, an eight-nation regional grouping that primarily focuses on security and defence issues.
“Concluded a one-hour bilateral meeting with State Councillor and FM Wang Yi of China on the sidelines of Dushanbe SCO Foreign Ministers Meeting. Discussions focused on the outstanding issues along the LAC within the Western Sector,” Mr Jaishankar tweeted, pertaining to the road of Actual Control.
“Highlighted that unilateral change of established order isn’t acceptable. Full restoration and maintenance of peace and tranquillity in border areas is important for development of our ties. Agreed on convening an early meeting of the Senior Military Commanders,” the secretary of state tweeted, along side a photograph of him shaking hands together with his Chinese counterpart. Both are in masks thanks to the pandemic.
