Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed

A PIL (public interest litigation) may be filed by any citizen be it a normal person, a NGO or social activist to seek redress for harm resulted from the violation of rights under law. It is a means to ensure that the public is involved in the judicial review of administrative decisions.

The Supreme Court has established guidelines to handle and dispose of PILs. It is crucial for the court to guarantee petitioners are acting with sincere intentions, and not seeking compensation for personal interest or for private gains.

Furthermore, PILs help safeguard the courts from being used by pressure groups to delay legitimate administrative actions or advance their political agendas. A misuse of PILs is all too common and has often resulted in delays or even quashing genuine cases.

In 2010, 2010 the Supreme Court imposed strict guidelines for courts to follow when dealing with Personal Interest Liens (PILs). It has long been believed that people file frivolous applications in the hope of gaining publicity, which places an enormous burden on the judiciary.

Public interest litigations can be filed before any High Court or Supreme Court by individuals, groups or institutions for the redress of grievances or violations of rights. These include the non-payment of wages, bond labour issues, women’s rights, pollution of the environment and more.

Indian courts are currently hearing several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) to protect and enforce various rights and interests. They cover the redress of child abuse to women’s rights protection, preservation of cultural heritage as well as ecological balance preservation and more.

Recently the Supreme Court has been hearing several public interest litigations (PILs). One of these cases was filed by a student in the West Godavari district who challenged the movie ‘RRR’ because of their distortion of Freedom fighters Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bhheem’s stories and their experiences as British policemen. To stop its release, they’ve asked the court to refuse the censorship certification issued by Censor Board and hold off on screening the movie until further notice.

Additionally, the judges encouraged makers to take the appropriate steps to avoid any controversy in the course of its release. They also asked that the censor board be sure no copyright infringement occurs.

Remember, the film was originally planned to hit screens on January 7, but was forced to be delayed due the increase in Covid-19 cases. The director said that If these numbers continue to rise, then the release of the film would not be possible.

While this was happening, the “RRR” film started being discussed on social media with many advocating for a boycott in Karnataka due to the Kannada version being given less importance than the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions.

The film won critical acclaim for its direction, cinematography, action sequences, music, script and performances. It earned international accolades and was named among the top 10 highest-grossing movies in India.
